It’s time for another instalment of My Happy Healthy Life! I have so much fun with these posts because I love talking to amazing and inspiring people about their healthy happy lifestyles I always get so many great ideas, and I love sharing their stories with you.
Today I’m talking to Sarah Faith Bernstein. One look at Sarah’s Insta account and you’ll know exactly why I wanted to interview her! The only think more inspiring than her gorgeous tropical photos is her glowing energy and beautiful outlook on life. I’m so happy to be talking to Sarah today about her past, her passions, and her health and wellness advice.
Hey Sarah! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Aloha! My name is Sarah Faith Bernstein and I am 22 years young. I am one year away from obtaining my Bachelors in Exercise Science and Holistic Nutrition. I also live on the beautiful island of Maui. I am very blessed to live on one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
Have you always lived a healthy and happy life? If not, what got you on this path?
Not at all. The life I have now was one that I used to dream about. When I was 13, I went through a series of traumatic and life changing events in a very short time. I was young and did not know how to react or cope with what had happened. I spiraled down and hit rock bottom. I was manic-depressive…I was filled with anxiety…I struggled with panic attacks and anger issues. The worst of it all was my eating disorder. Over the course of a few years I had become a skeleton and a ghost. I felt like I was dying. I had a friend give me a book called “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay (which is a must read). I realized that I got myself into this. I was the only one who could get me out of it. I then went to a yoga class with a friend and found so much healing and love for myself. Reading that book and going to that yoga class contributed to my first few steps on my path to wellness. I have come a long way.
How do you nourish your body? Can you tell us about your diet and exercise routine?
My eating lifestyle has evolved over the years and everyday I learn something new on how to nourish my temple better than the day before. I follow a vegan-based lifestyle. I eat a high carb-low fat diet and I feel incredible! A book I recommend to read on the subject is The 801010 Diet by Dr. Douglas Graham. I am not 801010 but I do follow many of the principles in that book. I love fruit! I am lucky because I live on Maui and we have the most amazing tropical fruits here. I love apple bananas, mangos, papayas, lilikoi (passion-fruit) pineapple, guavas, avocados, coconuts…you name it! I eat a lot of kale, and fresh greens, carrots, cucumber, potatoes, all the good stuff. But I don’t only eat just fresh fruits and vegetables. I do love Ezekiel bread and oatmeal too! I am lactose intolerant so I drink lots of coconut milk, almond milk and hemp milk. My main forms of exercise are yoga, hiking, and running on the beach. The thought of going to a gym doesn’t really appeal to me. Being outside is so therapeutic and healing.
How do your nourish your soul? What keeps your happy and balanced?
Great question! What keeps me balanced is doing something creative everyday. That could mean making jewelry, or creating a new healthy recipe, or just journaling on the beach. You need time for yourself. You have to flex that self-love muscle. Everyday, I have to do something for myself. Even if its only a half an hour. Meditating, taking a bubble bath, watching a funny movie, whatever it may be. It’s so important because if you don’t love yourself first, you cannot love other people properly. And then you go into this crazy habit of looking to others to fill that self-love deficit. It just doesn’t work that way.
I’m always curious about people’s morning routines! How do you start your day?
Every morning is not always the same, but the usual routine looks something like this: Get up early. Brush teeth and wash face with warm water. I use a Konjac sponge from Eco. Its 100% vegetable fiber and I massage it all over my face. I also love MV skincare line. They are organic and all natural. Definitely check out there site! I then make a huge mason jar of hot water and lemon juice. And then I like to go and write down what I am grateful for in my journal. If you want to see your life transform, get a grateful journal. I then stretch for about a half an hour and then go make breakfast, which is usually a big smoothie. I then like to take a cup of hot tea with me on the go.
Who do you follow for health/happiness advice?
Rachel Brathen, Laura Sykora, Briohny Smyth, and Tara Stiles are my yoga inspirations. I need to meet all four of them one day. If it were all at the same time that would be unreal!
One of my girlfriends, Ellen Fisher lives ten miles away from my house. She and I have become good friends and she has taught me a lot about nutrition and following a wholesome lifestyle. I am lucky that I can go to her for any advice. Plus, she has the cutest keiki [baby] on the island, and another one in the way!
Another huge inspiration for me is Melissa Ambrosini. Google her, follow her, subscribe to her. Just do it. She has taught me so much about being healthy not only in the body, but in the mind.
What are you reading right now?
So glad you asked! I am currently reading The Gifts of Imperfection by Dr. Brene Brown. She is a shame researcher and has written countless books on shame, vulnerability, courage, and hope. I recommend this book because it has taught me the power of vulnerability. My favorite quote so far is, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.” Definitely a must read!
What are you absolutely passionate about?
Definitely yoga, but my first love is cooking and baking. My mum is an incredible cook, so she taught me a lot of what I know. But I love the idea of taking a food that I grew up with and creating it into something that is healthier for you, but still tastes incredible. I am a total chef and I find it very therapeutic to be in the kitchen. I feel like I’m in my element.
What are your current health and happiness goals? What are you working towards?
I am going to be starting Kayla Itsines BBG 1.0 very soon, so there is that goal. Very excited about that! But I think my ultimate goal is to become more positive and grateful in my life. Also, I have another goal to meditate more…everyday actually. Even if its only for 15 minutes. I want to help more people through finding their own path to wellness as well. Nothing makes me happier than seeing other people become healthier and happier…I believe it’s their birthright.
