Fresh Mint Chocolate Banana Smoothie Recipe

May 06, 16

Fresh Mint Chocolate Banana Smoothie | My Spiritual Roadtrip

So lately I’ve been starting to miss blogging, and I just had a delicious smoothie for breakfast, so I thought I’d share it on here :)

Mint chocolate has always been one of my favourite sweet food combos (right up there with chocolate peanut butter. omg!).  I used to make mint chocolate smoothies using peppermint extract, and it was good, but then I started using fresh mint instead and all I can say is Game. Changer.  It is just delicious.

Here’s what you need to make one giant mason jar full of smoothie.

Note: For those of you who are new to my smoothie recipes, you may think it’s crazy that I’m using 5 bananas in my smoothie.  Basically, a year or so ago, I learned about high carb diets through Instagrammers like Loni Jane and Ellen Fisher and books like The 80/10/10 Diet.  I don’t follow a High Carb Low Fat diet (HCLF), because I don’t follow any kind of diet, but I still do enjoy eating lots of carby foods.  So yeah if you want to learn more you can check out those links.  I by no means am saying I think High Carb is for everyone, but I do personally enjoy eating a plant based high carb diet most of the time.

FRESH MINT CHOCOLATE SMOOTHIE

5 ripe bananas (fresh or frozen)
1 handful of fresh mint leaves
2 tablespoons of cacao nibs
1 tbsp Philosophie Cacao Magic (optional)
Almond milk/water (I like a 50/50 mix of both.  Use as much liquid as you want depending on how thick you want your smoothie).
Optional: hemp seeds or chia seeds.

Blend it up and enjoy!

If you want to make this a smoothie bowl instead of a smoothie, use half the amount of liquid and serve in my fave bowl, Coconut Bowls. :)

Healthy Cookies & Cream Smoothie Recipe {Vegan + Gluten Free}

Oct 23, 15

Healthy Cookies and Cream Smoothie Recipe (Vegan + Gluten Free) | My Spiritual Roadtrip

Let’s skip the chit-chat and get right to the recipe. :p

HEALTHY COOKIES & CREAM SMOOTHIE RECIPE

2 frozen bananas, sliced
1 1/2 cups nut milk
1 tbsp coconut flour
2 tbsp cacao nibs
1 tbsp coconut sugar OR maple syrup (but coconut sugar is the best!)
1 tbsp Cacao Magic or Coconut Magic (optional.  But this stuff is insanely good, omg).

Blend it all up and enjoy!!

If you want to make this a smoothie bowl instead of a smoothie, use only 1/2 cup almond milk, serve in these cute little coconut bowls, and top with delicious things like coconut flakes, cacao nibs, and whatever else you’re feelin.

Oil Free Granola Recipe

Oil Free Granola Recipe | My Spiritual Roadtrip

Happy Monday!

I have a new delicious recipe to share with you, courtesy of my friend Olivia.  Can I just say how happy I am that Olivia is guest posting regularly on my blog?  Her recipes are just so delicious, and her pictures are gorgeous, and I love being able to share her content with you all :)

In case you missed it, make sure to check out Olivia’s first post on my blog, How to Make Sushi.  Olivia is currently studying to become a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant as well as majoring in communications. She is passionate about promoting and living an abundant plant-based lifestyle for the health of people, animals and the planet. You can find her on Instagram and YouTube AND on her new blog, Liv’s Healthy Life.

Ahh granola. So sweet. So crunchy. So… healthy? Sadly, most store-bought granola isn’t that great for you. It usually has quite a bit of oil and preservatives in it. The good news is, making your own granola is crazy simple. I decided to try making an oil-free recipe to make it even healthier, and this is what I came up with! Make sure to bake it long enough that it gets crunchy.

GRANOLA INGREDIENTS

1 cup mixed nuts/seeds
1 cup oats
¼ cup water
1/3 cup maple syrup
1 tsp cinnamon

GRANOLA DIRECTIONS

Preheat your oven to 320 degrees F. Mix oats and nuts in a bowl. Then add the water, maple syrup and cinnamon and stir well to combine. Spread it out on a parchment paper-lined baking tray. Put it in the oven for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes take it out and stir it (making sure to break up any large chunks) and put it back in for 10 minutes. Stir again after 10 minutes and put it back in for 5 more minutes. After 25 minutes it should be crispy. If not, put it back in for a few more minutes. Feel free to add dried fruit or any other ingredients you like when it comes out. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for 1 week.

PARFAIT DIRECTIONS

One of my favourite ways to eat granola is in a smoothie parfait. Simply layer your favourite smoothie with fruit and granola (I,Kate, love serving them in my coconut bowls). Layer it however you like, and make sure to share a photo on instagram and hashtag #livshealthylife so I can see your creations!

How to Open a Coconut + Coconut Smoothie Bowl Recipe

How to Open a Coconut + Coconut Smoothie Bowl Recipe | My Spiritual Roadtrip

I always see these cute little coconut smoothie bowls on Instagram, and since I am staying with my friend for a few days before I leave for New York, we thought it would be a good time to give them a try!

The coconut I bought wasn’t that fresh, so I just ended up using it as a bowl and not drinking the coconut water or eating the meat, but it was really fun to make, so I thought I’d share the details here. 😊

First things first: you’re going to need a coconut.  Not the green young coconuts, but the smaller brown ones.

Then you’re going to need to break it in half so you have two little smoothie bowls.

My friend and I followed this video, but instead of whacking the coconut with the hammer in our hand (which I guarantee would have resulted in a smashed finger), we took the coconut into the driveway and hit the coconut with a hammer until it cracked in half (shout out to Lauren for getting the job done!).  This is the video that we watched.

Then you just fill it up with smoothie!  Any smoothie bowl recipe will do, but this is what we used.

  • 6 frozen bananas, sliced thin
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup homemade almond milk

Blend it all up in a food processor or high speed blender, scoop it into the coconut shells and top with shredded coconut.

Delish and so tropical!  Just one more way that I am attempting to bring the Hawaiian lifestyle to my home in Halifax. 😎

Iced Coffee Smoothie Recipe (Vegan + Sugar Free)

Aug 28, 15

Iced Coffee Smoothie Recipe {Vegan + Sugar Free} | my Spiritual Roadtrip

I whipped together this amazing smoothie the other day and managed to keep from downing it long enough to snap a few photos for this post .

So my latest obsession is coffee flavoured smoothies.  Even though I don’t drink a lot of coffee, I have always loved coffee flavoured things.  I use organic instant coffee grounds in my smoothie because I find it way easier than making coffee, letting it cool, and then adding it to my smoothie.  The grounds blend up instantly, so don’t worry about getting gritty bits in your smoothie.

Instant Iced Coffee Smoothie Recipe

2 bananas (frozen)
3 medjool dates, pitted
1 1/2 tsp. organic instant coffee grounds
water OR almond milk
Optional: Add 1 tbsp of Cacao Magic or Coconut Magic to make this a mocha!

Note: to freeze bananas, peel them first, then stick them in a container or zip lock bag and stick them in the freezer.

Delicious and Healthy Smoothie Booster Powder Recipe

Jul 07, 15

SONY DSC

The other night, I was trying to make rawnola (a.k.a. raw granola- a popular recipe in the raw food world) without following a recipe, and it was a fail in the sense that it definitely did not come out the way it was supposed to, but a major win because it turned out to be super delicious!

It failed as a rawnola because I used a much higher ratio of dry ingredients than I was supposed to.  You need lots of sticky fruits like dates or dried mulberries to get the texture you need.  Instead, it turned into almost a powder consistency, which you can sprinkle onto your smoothies, smoothie bowls, yogurt, etc.  I also like to add a few table spoons directly into smoothies before blending to add some sweetness and fiber.

The mulberries in the recipe are nutritional powerhouses!  Mulberries are full of antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, fibre, calcium, and even protein.

Smoothie Booster Powder

3/4 cup dried mulberries
1/3 cup of oats
1/3 cup of coconut flakes OR shredded coconut
1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon
*I didn’t the first time, but I think in the future I would add some chia and/or hemp seeds.
Optional: Add 3 tbsp Philosophie superfoods for an extra nutritional boost!

Blend it up and store in a jar in the fridge.  Add it to smoothies or as a topping on smoothie bowls and “nice cream” recipes.  For an insta-worthy bowl, serve in one of these cute coconut bowls!

This would also be delicious sprinkled over my Key Lime Pie Smoothie too because it would be kind of like the crust from the actual pie.  So yum!

Enjoy and have a wonderful day :D

Key Lime Pie Smoothie and “Ice Cream” Recipe (Vegan & Sugar Free)

Key Lime Pie Smoothie

Key Lime Pie Smoothie Recipe VeganHappy Canada Day everyone!!

It is a gorgeous day here in Halifax- perfect fireworks weather :D  I thought I’d celebrate here on the blog by sharing this delicious Key Lime Pie Smoothie recipe.

A friend asked suggested I make a recipe for this, and I am so happy with how it turned out!  You’re going to love it.  For some reason I thought Key Lime Pie was full of kiwi, so after she suggested it I went out and bought 5 of them, and then I went home and googled actual key lime pie recipes for inspiration and realized there were no kiwis involved.  Sometimes I like kiwis, but sometimes they kind of weird me out (not sure why), so I am just as happy that they aren’t needed.

When I went to take photos for this post, I realized my camera was dead, so I had to use my iPhone.  I usually can’t be bothered to get my camera out for day to day pictures, but I like to use it for my food pics.  But the iPhone came through for me today :D

Key Lime Pie Smoothie Ingredients

Healthy Key Lime Pie Smoothie Ingredients

shredded coconut

I originally made this recipe as a “nice cream” (aka vegan ice cream- because it’s nice to the animals :D ), and then from there made it into a smoothie.  So you have both options.  If you don’t have an intense blender like a Vitamix, you’ll want to use a food processor if you decide to make it as a nice cream.

Vegan Key Lime Pie Smoothie Recipe

Key Lime Pie Smoothie & “Ice Cream” Recipe

3 Frozen Bananas
1 tablespoon shredded coconut OR coconut flakes
2 tablespoons canned coconut milk
Juice of 2 limes
Zest of 1/2 lime
Almond Milk (for smoothie only)

Blend all ingredients or mix in a food processor.  If you’re making a smoothie bowl, serve it in these cute coconut bowls!

Enjoy :)

Mocha Maca Smoothie Recipe + The Benefits of Cacao and Maca Powders

Apr 29, 15

Get an instant energy boost with this delicious Mocha Maca Smoothie Recipe!! | My Spiritual Roadtrip

This smoothie, with its combo of coffee, cacao, and maca, is a serious energy booster, so I would recommend it for the mornings rather than later in the day.  I always drink decaffeinated coffee, but the caffeine in the cacao still keeps me up if I have it too late in the day.

I use cacao in a lot of the recipes, and so you may be wondering what it is.  Cacao is basically the raw, unprocessed version of cocoa.  So if you don’t have any on hand, feel free to use cocoa, just know that you won’t be getting the health benefits of the raw version.  Raw cacao is considered a superfood and is full of antioxidants and magnesium.

Maca is another superfood that I use regularly.  It doesn’t really affect the flavour of the drink, but it is full of vitamins and minerals, increases energy, balances hormones, is said to improve sexual function, and much more.

Mocha Maca Smoothie

  • 2 bananas (frozen)
  • 1 tablespoon cacao
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water OR 1/2 cup coffee
  • 1 teaspoon maca
  • 1 tbsp cacao magic (optional)
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water OR almond milk
  • Greens (optional)

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Blend it up and enjoy your delicious energy boost!  You can also use half the amount of liquid and serve this as a smoothie bowl!  I like serving my smoothie bowls in these adorable coconut bowls!

To make it even more summery and refreshing, add some ice cubes!  We’re not there yet weather-wise in Halifax, but I am praying for warmer weather soon!  I’m leaving for New York in less than a week, and I can’t wait for their warmer weather.

Have a happy Wednesday :D
