Welcome to the newest installation of My Happy Healthy Life, where I interview people who inspire me about their health, wellness, and spiritual lifestyles. I am so excited to be interviewing my friend Anik today. Anik is a holistic life coach and a nutritional consultant, and you can connect with her on her brand new blog
I met Anik almost a year ago exactly when I went to a weekend workshop at her beautiful home in New Brunswick (seriously one of the most gorgeous homes I’ve ever been in- I have a picture of it on my vision board lol). As soon as I met Anik, I knew I’d met a really amazing person, and I continue to just be so inspired by her energy and her outlook on life. She is just a really beautiful woman, so kind and warm, and I am so happy to introduce you to her today.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
Thank you Kate, it’s such a pleasure to be featured on your blog. My Spiritual Roadtrip is such an inspiration! Hi everyone, I’m Anik, I’m a 34 yrs old holistic lifestyle coach and nutritional consultant living on the beach in Grande-Digue, NB. I’m also the creator of OrgAnik Cuisine, a facebook webpage where I share my gluten-free, dairy free, plant based recipes. I’m super passionate about everything that has to do with food, health, yoga, and living an amazing life. I love learning about myself and expanding so I can help others do the same.
Have you always lived a healthy and happy life? If not, what got you on this path?
I had a very happy childhood but was always sick as a little girl, I wasn’t connecting my physical symptoms with all the junky foods I was eating. When I was 25 yrs. old I experienced a car accident and suffered back injuries and inflammation for months to follow. One day, I had had enough of taking 5 different prescribed pain medications and decided to search out other options. I visited a Naturopathic doctor who told me to eliminate the “dirty whites” from my diet. That meant no more sugar, grains, flour, dairy or salt. I remember leaving his office feeling so angry that he gave me a food prescription, I just wanted to be fixed. Feeling desperate, I gave it a try, I made homemade meals for myself, cutting out all the foods he told me to stop eating. I ate more fruits, more vegetables and ate nothing processed that came from a box. After 5 days my back inflammation was 50% better and my depression had lifted! My mind was feeling clearer than it been in years, I was so excited to discover that food could have such an important impact on the way I felt both physically and emotionally. Shortly after those 5 days I started doing serious research and soon became a vegan and healed myself of many ailments that I had been dealing with since I was young. I’m grateful the accident got my attention and put me on this amazing path in my life.
How do you nourish your body? Can you tell us about your diet and exercise routine?
I do yoga, stretching and exercise everyday, and in the summer I throw in some swimming and walks on the beach. I stay hydrated with 2-3 litres of water and eat a very clean well balanced diet. I don’t eat wheat, dairy, sugar and limit my grain intake. I’ve been learning that tuning in to my body’s needs without having a defined food regime is real freedom and balance for me. I simply follow what feels right
How do your nourish your soul? What keeps your happy and balanced?
One of my favorite subject! I believe in filling up my own cup first (with self love) and then offering the overflow to others around me. This is my little recipe for happiness. I used to put the responsibility on other people to make me happy and I was always feeling so much lack and emptiness. I now create time for myself and by myself every single day. This has been one of the most empowering experiences for me. My favorite thing to do is journal, writing is a powerful way to connect with myself. I make it a point to sit in reflection, tune in and do some writing. During my alone time I love to create art by sketching or painting, and some days I just feel like dancing or meditating, I follow the flow!
I’m always curious about people’s morning routines! How do you start your day?
Mornings are glorious! I feel so inspired and energized when I wake up, it’s the best time to create! I wake up at 7am every morning, I drink 1/2 liter of water, eat some fruit, put on some fun music and hop on the elliptical for 30 mins. Then I do some yoga and stretch for another 30 minutes. After my exercise routine I’ll have a green smoothie and sit with my journal to do some reflection and writing for 30-40 minutes. I usually set some goals and build up positive feel-good momentum for my day.
Who do you follow for health/happiness advice?
People who inspire me to grow. (in no particular order) Abraham-Hicks, Melissa Ambrosini, Jena La Flamme, Teal Swan, Gabrielle Bernstein, Kimberly Snyder.
What are you reading right now?
I’m loving Danielle Laporte’s book, The Desire Map: A Guide to Creating Goals with Soul. I’m really taking my time with this book as it’s jam-packed with questions for doing self-work, love love it! I absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to do some self-expansion.
What are you absolutely passionate about?
I love change and growth. I’m passionate about whatever thing I’m in LOVE with in the moment, seems there’s always a new flavor of the month for me. Right now I’m all about women’s moontime cycles and our connection with the earth, Herbology, Ayurveda, blending my own teas, chalk pastels, paddleboarding… And on the other side of the spectrum I’m a bit obsessed with watching makeup tutorials, browsing fitness pics on Instagram, and looking for new hair ideas for dying my hair blonder. Being a Libra, I love to keep a good balance between spirituality and having fun!
What are your current health and happiness goals? What are you working towards?
My only goal for 2015 is to focus on being happy in everything that I do. I believe happiness is the secret to true health and wellness. <3
